The Kracken
My son went to go see Clash of the Titans this week. I saw the old school version and read the book. In the new version, my son said that the Kracken was made from the skin of Hades. Wouldn't the Kracken be a creation of Poseidon? inquiring minds want to know.

The Kracken is a Titan. The Titans were around before Poseidon, they ruled the Earth before the gods in Greek Mythology. Kronos was a Titan too and so was Medusae in some myths. Medusae in other myths was cursed by one of the gods for being too beautiful and having Zeus want to seduce her, so I think it was Zeus wife. Kronos and his wife spawned the gods and created the Greek Pantheon of gods and goddesses as their children. Then the Titans were slowly destroyed by the gods and heros of Greek mythology like Hercules. Other Titans: hydra, cyclops, giants. This is why the movie is called "Clash of the Titans".

oh... ok that makes more sense. Ther are a bunch of versions of the same myth. It gets kinda confusing. I never could remember where the Kracken came from. Now the versions that I heard from with Medudsa's story was that she was either Athena or Aphrodite's High Priestess and Poseidon thought she was hot and seduced her. Hence, the curse. There was another twist that she couldn't give birth as long as she remained on earth. When Perseus chopped off her head Pegasus sprang full grown from her. Also she is a gorgon from the start and she has two "sister" I have forgotten what the sisters looked like, but nobody could top Medusa. They live in the Garden of Hesperides. Funny, I didn't associate the Kracken and Medusa as Titan although they were around with the rest of them. The Greeks seem to put beings into neat categories. So, I associate Medusa as gorgon, not Titan. Gives me something to meditate on.

At least I didn't have to explain Disney's versoin of the Kracken. LOL
Thanks JB...

The Gorgon Medusa has so many different myths it is hard to say for sure which one is the 'truth'. If you want to create Medusa and her sisters- Stheno and Euryale- as Titans it is important to believe the myth that they were born from chthonic monsters from archaic times, Ceto and her brother Phorcys. This would disprove the belief that she was a maiden/priestess of Athena.
The priestess myth says that when she boasted that her beauty outshown Athena herself the girl was fated to be punished, but the icing on the cake was when she slept with Poseidon within the goddess' temple. The wrath of Athena was said to transform her hair into serpents and make her so hideous that to look at her would turn one to stone. But this myth would show that the 'sisters' were just there for the trinities the greeks loved.
Now the Kracken is definately a Titan, some even say it is Ceto herself in animal form. There are no stories of parents how the Kraken comes into existance it just tells of the death by Perseus to save his soon-to-be wife Andromeda from being sacraficed to the thing by Poseidon because Andromeda's mother claimed to be more beautiful than ever.
Note to self, modesty is a theme in a LOT of myths. haha Hope this helps a bitHave patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart. WARNING: I was extremely upset when i posted this - still the GODS suggest it remain ( I will mellow - i ALWAYS do)
I saw the movie day before yesterday - it was ok - epic battles, effects were up to standard. on its own as a story it would have been a nice romantic romp
HOWEVER since i personally know the GODs and Athena - being a patron (sister) of mine - i have to say this...
this was the most BLASPHEMOUS, propagandized piece of trash cinema i have ever seen and Athena is pissed pissed pissed off
at the lack of respect - at being denied any part in the myth ... leaving her owl behind is a STATEMENT - substituting ever other part
that's HER SHIELD!
that's HER Pegasus!
SHE helped Perseus through out the Quest - it is OUTRAGEOUS!
Here is a myth - a story to demonstrate the Glory and Compassion of the GODs - and the humility of Mortals
and the movie has the gall to actually give the finger to its own theme - and elevate the mortals over the Divine!
Do you know Athena??? She is wise courageous - protector of heroes and the underdog - SHE has saved my ass (with and without Hermes) countless times
usually SHE's holding me back - now Hermes AND i can barely restrain her together!
This is a goddess who is known for Divine retribution on HER own Priestesses -- just for looking pretty or spinning well !!!
How do you think the Divine Pallas Athena is going to receive this art?
I'll tell you - YOU don't want to know!
YOU HAVE BROUGHT THE CLASH OF THE TITANS DOWN ON YOUR MORTAL HEADS!
For my part - I'm delighted this WHITEWASH of Hera's has been brought to light!
Notice how they keep the real bitches - jealous HERA - Queen of Marriage and Monogamy - and APHRODITE - the instigator of Every great war
-- out of it and make it look like it's all about the vanity and lack of compassion of ZEUS, HADES and MEN in general
BLASPHEMY !
Even HECATE is blushing in shame - and on behalf of Athena, Hermes, and I Dionysus - we invite HECATE to cease being a Handmaiden to Hera or Persephone --and take a Crown and Throne beside us in the NEW OLYMPUS in the name of our father ZEUS and the GODS!
Feel free to verify this offer by confirming it with GODs yourself
D

Silent Aislynn: Thanks for the insight. I know the Medusa debate can be a whole thread unto itself, and would be a great subject to explore.
wyrdic: I agree with you on the inaccuracies on the movie. I learned a long time ago to take it witha a grain of salt on how Hollywood massacred the great myths of old. I didn't want to go there. I just watch those movies for the great epic battles. Believe me, Hercules (Disney) made my demons that possess my soul want to start a revolution, not to mention the tv show which was salvageable sometimes, just for the battles. Here's another one, I thought my demons were going to pop out and attack the tv is Troy, OMGS if it wasn't for Brad Pitt as Achilles and Eric Bana as Hector looking so yummy, it wouldn't be worth my time. (shudders, debates with demons on if we should listen to Hatebreed or Slayer)
The Silver lining:
The one good thing that can come from these movies is that it gets people curious. I was so impressed by the original Clash of the Titans movies and the book that it was the catalyst for my path of The Goddess. My son has expressed an interest in the Wiccan way, and try to talk to a teenaged boy about anything. I'd have better luck telling the cat. At least the cat pretends to listen. So, here I am answering questions about some inaccurate movie fodder. Gods, give me strength. I now know why some animals eat their young. lol

yes!! I have been reminding myself of that silver lining every hour! It is working, my divine wrath is sublimating into human disdain. It is better to rheawaken the thirst for the mythical and the spiritual - even in error than to ignore it or treat it indifferently. Perhaps - as i reluctantly learned from Crowley - the errors or inaccuracies - serve as tests and assignments for research - which not only force us to seek out our own truths and place in the Cosmos -- but incidentally make us better students and researchers - IMHO
but it often takes longer - and there's no degree or best-seller guaranteed (not that there's anything wrong with those)

I have been told by my friends that I have a talent of making lemonade out of lemons. I look at it this way, you can either get your panties in an uproar over something that you can't really change or go with the flow and try to make the best of a bad situation. It keeps the demons that posess my soul from starting a revolution. lol Believe me if I had a nickel for everytime someone finds out I'm pagan and get a Charmed reference lets just say I could pay someone to make our great myths more accurate. lol Hey at least I didn't make the Pirates of the Carribean reference about the Kracken. OMGS I wouldn't want that coming back to life and kick my bahookey for the blasphemy.
