I'm asking all to send an urgent prayer up for our beautiful Jewel.
It seems that she was struck or fell...Her bottom half is paralysed almost totally.
When I discovered it on Saturday night I spoke to the vet, he said there was no need to see her yet. her tail was moving a little, but he wasn't responding the her toes being pinched. He was hopeful that is was temporary nerve damage, but said that if she did not improve within 24 hours it was probably something worse, like a broken back.
She did improve, and started pulling her feet away when her toes were pinched. The vet said that was a good sign, and to keep watching her. (it's what they would do if I took her to him, so she may as well be comfortable at home)
But then, as of last night, although she's still responding to the toe-pinching, she's suddenly stopped moving her tail altogether, her legs seem really stiff and cold, and she can no longer even drag herself to the litter box and so she's messing on herself. We're taking her to the vet tomorrow (I cannot possibly do it this afternoon - work commitments - and vets are not open past 6 pm here).
Please offer a prayer that we either figure out quickly what's wrong with Jewel, that she's not in pain (which she doesn't seem to be), and that if we do figure it out that she can get help, or that if she has to be euthanized that her passage is peaceful and safe.
I will say a prayer and light a candle for Jewel.
Our cat Bentley had the same thing happen to him. Unfortunately he didnt survive, but his death was peaceful, as in he didnt seem to be in any pain.
I really hope that Jewel manages to get well again though.
Thank you, Pebbles. She's only a year old and she is a really sweet cat. But, every living thing has to die, and maybe it's just her time. Either way I don't want her to suffer.
My heart goes out to you and Alex and your beautiful Jewel. I remember the photos you posted of her as a young kitten last summer with her beautiful "jewel" marking on her head. She is in my prayers tonight. Please let us know what the vet says on Wednesday.
The vet thinks that Jewel has a good chance of making a total recovery!
He seems to think that the problem may be neurological. You see, ten days or so ago, Jewel went to get spayed. She had been pregnant but she enver had the kittens. She came home one day bleeding from her vagina...and so we took her to the vet (Dr H). He spayed her and told us she would never have had the kittens, and that her uterus was "a mess", but gave us no other explanation. He's an old-school vet who doesn't really 'do' all the new-fangled machines and testing devices and so one. He's a good doctor for simple stuff like neutering and shots (and cheaper since he's at the RSPCA), but not for a problem like Jewel's.
The vet we've taken her to this time, Dr Duckhouse (what a name for a vet), is a very sophisticated doctor who will try any and all avenues possible before recommending euthanasia, and he thinks the two incidents are related, and is going to be investigating that. He's going to run some tests, but he said that the fact that she still has some motor-reflex skills, doesn't seem to be in any pain and is not disoriented, confused or had any signs of brain problems are very good signs.
YAY!! So I will let you know what the results of the tests are as we get them!
