So I've spent the last hour reading over articles both here and elsewhere concerning familiars, but I'm still not certain about something that happened last night. Could someone help me out?
You see, my husband and I were driving home from a friend's house last night. We were just about to pull into our parking spot at our apartment when I spotted a black cat with very unusually bright orange eyes watching us pull in. It was curled up on the sidewalk facing the direction we were coming from, as if it were waiting for us. My husband went ahead, but I stayed behind and watched the cat. It never took it's eyes off me and didn't blink. I saw something oddly calm and piercing in it's eyes that stirred a feeling of... well, otherworldliness inside me. Before I even knew what I was doing I had dropped the defenses around my heart and mind and "opened my eyes," so to speak. I reached out with my heart and mind to the cat, who was still a good eight feet away from me, and felt the urge to sit on the curb. As I did, the cat ran to me, pressing its head against my hand and demanding to be scratched and pet with a fervor that I have never seen in a grown cat. The texture of it's short hair was matted and coarse, like a stray would feel, but it was so friendly and full of adoration that it didn't seem like a wild cat without an owner. After a little while it got up and started to walk away, but every few feet it would stop to look at me like it was expecting me to follow it. I did, and it jumped onto another car and stared with fixed eyes at the tree on the corner. I stroked it again, and it just stared at the tree.
I would have reached out to the tree and tried to see what the cat might have been telling me, but my sister-in-law drove up behind me with her music blaring and sneered "Having fun staring at the kitty, Ash?" She being the only person who can inspire me to immediate fury, I lost the calm and sensitivity that the cat brought me. I told Pam as calmly as I could that my brother was waiting for her and that she should park her car and go inside, but I couldn't relax even after she drove down to her parking space. The cat seemed to know how I was feeling and rubbed against my hand.
My husband came down and pet it, but it shied away from his touch at first. When I whispered that it was ok, it seemed to warm up to him a little. My sister-in-law snuck up to it after my husband had taken me inside, but she reported that the cat hissed at her and wouldn't let her touch it.
I felt such a connection to the cat, but I didn't want to make assumptions. Is it possible that the cat could be a familiar, and if so, what should I do if I see it again? I don't want to randomly kidnap someone's cat if it does belong to a resident of our complex. I also don't want to trap it in my apartment if it doesn't want to be there... I'm just confused. D:
In my opinion, this cat could belong to someone else and still be your familiar. It can come and go as it pleases like all cats prefer to do...Or its possible that it could be a stray but its an outside cat. Maybe instead of a familiar it has just come with a message or you should try meditating under that tree and find out if it has something to show you. Jus somethin to think about...
