Sorry I didn't get this posted sooner. I haven't checked this forum in a while.
The market near me sells what they call "chicken soup fixins" It is the trimmings from the fancy cuts of chicken. It's very cheap less than a dollar a pound. Some places sell necks and backs for soup. If you use them you have to cook the broth first then strain it and pick out the bones. I put it in the crock pot with water, salt, garlic. celery, parsley and a little bit of onion. Then just let it cook all day. About an hour before it's done I add rice or barley.
When it's done I stir in 1/2 teaspoon of cod liver oil. Mine is a 2 quart pot. If yours is bigger you might want to add more.
My cats are senior citizens like me and they seem to thrive on this. Patchey is 14 and still hunts mice and things. I keep a dish of dry food out for snacks too.
I got a phone call one night from my coven's high Priestess, saying that a friend of hers had new kittens and she was desperate to get rid of them. I had just lost the kitten I was going to get (she was adopted out from under me while she was still being fostered by my friend. We were soooo angry!) so I was excited to hear about this kitten.
As soon as she mentioned the kitty the name "Whisper" popped into my head. The next day when I went to see the kittens, one of them quietly popped out from under a chair and tackled her siblings. Her markings were alot lighter than the other kittens and she was alot smaller too. The owner was surprised when I picked hthe kitty up and stated firmly that this was the kitten that she wanted to show me, that her name was Whisper, and she was indeed coming home with me. The woman confirmed that she was the one and that she was 4 weeks old and needed to be out of the house right away!!! So I took her home and had to show her how to groom herself (no licking involved. Just a warm damp cloth [lol]). She loves attention and is always following me around and trying to cuddle.
I have never before me such a rambunctious, stubborn, self assured, and vocal cat in my life. She always tells you what she wants and when she wants it and is not afraid to swat back when you give her heck for something. But she is so sweet. If a single tear rolls down my cheek, she is right there, paw on my shoulder, furry little face nuzzling my cheek.
This is her right after I brought her home. She was born May 20, 2008. Here she is about 4 weeks old.
