Obama has selected Rick Warren, a prominent evangelical minister, to perform the invocation at his inauguration. Warren was a leader in opposition to the Prop 8 vote in California.
Very good article; check it out.
Now, How do You feel about this??
I'm obviously not a Christian, so I'm not necessarily going to be pleased with any Christian that is chosen to give the invocation at Obama's inauguration. (But, then again, I didn't expect him to pick a Wiccan High Priestess to give the invocation either!) I personally think it wasn't the wisest choice to pick this particular pastor who supported Prop 8, and it's an insensitive move on the part of Obama's people. (Linn, by the way, ya got it backwards. Those who opposed gay marriage supported Prop 8; those for gay marriage opposed Prop 8.)
But, as the article points out, it appears this choice was made in an "conciliatory gesture toward social conservatives who opposed him in November," and I can understand his attempt to reach out to them on this occasion. I don't particularly like his choice, and perhaps his "camp" will re-think the choice, although I would be surprised if it is changed.
Does this change my opinion of Obama or put a damper on what will be the inauguration of our nation's first black president? Not in my eyes.
