I'm giving a speech
I'm looking for some information either famous and/or historical bisexuals or bisexual movements. i am trying to come up with a word besides "bisexual" to describe those of that orientation (including myself) who find the world offensive. i think it intones that a bisexual person is interested in the "sex" and not the "relationship". i am giving a speech in a few weeks on this topic and would love any and all of you to help me. [grin]
if you can help or if you need more clarification, just let me know.

Well the Stonewall incident wasn't only for gay men. It was a movement for all those who do not fight the traditional concept of sexual identity.
As for a different term than bi-sexual what about gender-indiscriminate or sexually irrelevant.
I don't know. I'm tired. I really should get some milk and cookies then go to bed. If I think of something else I'll let you know.

Re: I'm giving a speech
how about open minded people with open hearts or people who think of love with their brain and heart as opposed to genitals? Not a good scientific description but fairly apt I think

Re: I'm giving a speech
those are all awesome, but i am looking for onr word that could replace bisexual as the term that defines those who love bothe genders.
i'm trying to get it out of the "sexual" connotation and show people that bisexual people have relationships just like gays, lesbians, or heteros. cause to me and others i'm speaking with, bisexual sounds like "just in it for the sex'. and thats not how it works.

Heka, off the top of my head, GLBT history is eluding me (It's been a long day! *chuckles*)... But as far as another name for Bisexual, you might want to try simply "Bi." Alot of people are now claiming that word because it does not have sexual overtones and sounds simple- like Gay and Lesbian.

If you are interested in current events for the GLBT community this would be the perfect website. It lists all the current cases being fought by the ACLU for our community.

Re: I'm giving a speech
I understand your rationale, but let's not forget that "heteros" is short for heterosexual, a word that also has a connotation attached to sexual relationships. One that is heterosexual isn't "just in it for the sex," either. I'm not trying to stir the waters here; just making an observation.Heka wrote:

I agree. We tend to get really sticky when we want to put labels on things.

Oh Thelma, you're always trying to stir the waters, and that's why we love ya!thelma6954 wrote:

While your observation is correct, heterosexuals also have an alternate word: straight. "Straight" even has the added bonus of sounding clean, nice, natural, good, proper, and right, such as in the phrases "straight-laced" or "straight and narrow".
So I do know what Heka is looking for; a corresponding term for bisexuals, which doesn't really exist yet I guess...

How about:
Perfect: A bisexual flower with functional stamens (androecium) and a functional pistil (gynoecium).
It like the term "Gay" and "Straight" derive from another commonly used word but has underlying context.
Also the following links are some bisexual resources:

The Wikipedia webiste has much information on the subject including further links to webpages which might be helpful.
