The only one? Not quite. In the minority? Definitely.
"Straight-laced", etc., is still viewed as the ideal. Fathers are still trying to get sons to cut their hair, put the skateboard away, and put on a tie so they can "get a real job". We're still living in that uptight kind of society. That's why those teenage rebel themes are as relevant in t.v. and movies today as they were 50 years ago.
And that's why people like us feel the need to shake things up! Take that, Puritans!

Re: I'm giving a speech
I agree with you artemis... almost to the point of getting myself in trouble. While in the car one day recently with my mother, she was in the process of giving me directions when she said now go straight for 5 bloacks and before I could stop myself the words "Forward, mother, Forward. Never go straight" popped out of my mouth.
Thank the gods momma dearest is a tad bit on the deaf side!

Re: I'm giving a speech
i think i may have found a word. i was sifting though some old papers and ran across some terms for the greek goddess Aphrodite. one of the words used to describe her is Cyprian, after the place of her birth. i knnow it reminds me more of "Lesbian" after Lesbos, but i kind of like the way the word sounds. After all, Aphrodite was the goddess of the entire spectrum of love. what do you guys think?

Re: I'm giving a speech
very nice. and has the added bonus of not being a blatant word that attracks WAY to much attention when you are talking over dinner at a resturant.
Oh come on... I can't be the only person here who has found people either scooting away with distate written large over their faces ... or nearly falling over as they try to lean in to hear more!

Re: I'm giving a speech
yeah i like for that same reason. my other Cyprian friends have already started using it. i know it will take A LOT of time for people to understand the word for waht is, but i'm happy i've found a word i can be proud of rather than cringe at.
if any of you want to use the term as well, i will totally bake you cookies. [grin]

Re: I'm giving a speech
This happens to me constantly. And in NYC, that's quite an accomplishment. We're all terribly jaded, you know. Yet, somehow, discussing the Pagan rituals we plan on performing once our friend is through with his sex reassignment surgery always seems to turn heads at the Carnegie Deli.Magpiebard wrote:

Re: I'm giving a speech
Congrats on the success!!!
I would just like to point out that the term "life-style," is not really accepted in the GLTB community. This term implies that there is a choice in who you are atracted to, when of course we know better.
In your context I think the word "community" would be more applicable.
I'm just bringing this up since we are on the topic of "labels."[wink][wink]
