To Salt or Not To Salt?
I have an elderly grandfather. I help my mother take care of him. He has to watch his salt for health reasons. I prepare most of his meals and make sure that he is not given the salt shaker (He turns the shaker upside-down over his food to salt it). I have recently stopped using salt and started with a salt substitute (doctor approved) to try controling his salt intake.
My problem is he likes the high salt snack foods and he can't seem to control him self when eating these foods.(over eating or snaking). I'm trying protion control, but I not sure how long this will work.
Is my only alternative to make his snack foods myself with a lower salt content or a salt alternative?
[Pap won't eat the no salt snacks on the market. He says that they have no taste. By the way Pap is 96 years old]
Help if you can.[frown]

thank you for your sugesstion. His salt is restricted because of congestive heart failiure.... so he doesn't drown in his own fluids.

My doctor told me to watch the salt too, because my blood pressure was starting to creep up. Try garlic and onion to spice up the flavor for meals. There are "lightly salted nuts" you can buy at the supermarket, and mix them up with dried fruit, and unsalted sunflower seeds. The best thing to snack on is fruit. Watermelon is perfectly satisfying this time of year. Hope this helps some.
