    Default ....the Other Dark Meat

    http://www.mcclatchydc.com/251/story/59566.html

Raccoon is making it to the table

...but, not MY table, you understand.

What are Your thoughts on "Game" and "Critter" meat?

    [confused]

Barbequed Coon is a common dish here in Ky for some folk. I have always heard it is very greasy so I have never tried it. If hungry enought I probably would, but I would have to be veerrry hungry.[tongue]

If it weren't for putting game on the table and, canning from the garden, this year would have been a lot tougher.

I wouldn't eat most game from urban areas, because I know what they've been eating--GARBAGE! And you can taste it in the meat.

So, I'm thankful to have rabbit, duck and goose in the freezer, and I'm looking to go pheasant, turkey and quail hunting in the comming weeks.

A nice thing is, that I can share and trade with my other hunter/fisherman mates, so the variety is boundless--Both, from the gardens and the woods.

Piper!! Glory be ! Long time, no see. Got any good recipes for this wild game? I haven't had quail since I don't know when. It's one of my favorite wild meats. I made a pot of your wonderful tater & leek soup just last week.
Good to see you here again.[smile]

I feel guilty enough eating the common meats..so nope..not me..you wouldn't see my eating Racoon, I'd rather sit close to one and just observe it.

Like I have said before, I live on the Down side of the Blue Ridge Mountains; local folks have a History of Hunting and Eating whatever is available. Raccoon, Possum...Deer and Bear are quite common, as well as Grouse, Phesant, Quail and Turkey. I will Hunt IF the need arises...... till then, I catch my food at Kroger's. [wink]

Piper!! Good Goddess!! I can't believe my eyes!! Just where have you been the last couple of years?? It's great to see you back among us.

As for me, I "catch" my viddles at the local Albertson's. You won't catch me eating raccoon, or even Bambi or Thumper for that matter. I'd have to be awfully hungry and lost in the wilderness for quite a while before I'd resort to killing and eating wild critters with my own two hands.

    Hey Uaine,

One of my hunting partner's wives does a great recipe with quail. She simply marinates them in tinned cream of mushroom soup, then grills them. With a little grilled root veg and pilaf, its a wonderous supper to arrive for after a cold day hunting...The copious amounts of single malt don't hurt either.

Mmmmmmm, Now that makes my mouth water, I will have to settle for trying it with a small chicken. All the Quail around here still have their little topknots on, none in the larder. Just too darn cute to shoot!

yes, they Be Cute......... but also Tasty ! I uese to Raise Quail that I would release into the wild; I did about 6 to 8 covies a season. (no, I did not Hunt in the same field that I released my wee babies into.) Few things are better than a platter of Quail stuffed with wild rice....
We also hunt Dove in this area; they are abundant and also very good .....
