    Default Preparing for Winter...

Anyone have advice on preparing for winter?

I'm getting ready to replace the weatherstripping on my doors and sealing my windows and thought I'd see if anyone else has some good winterizing tips while I'm at it....

This is not exactly a winter tip, but we replaced all the thermostats in the house with programable ones last year, we were able to cut our gas consumption by 25%. They cost between $20 and $100 each. They definetly paid for themselves, our budget plan through the gas company went from $177 a month to $130! Thats $564 a year less to heat our home! Plus I'm sure it saved on the A/C bill to, but I haven't run the comps on that yet.

Make sure you clean all the debris out of your rain gutters... if it freezes, it can cause water to flow under your roofing material.

Fall is the proper time for putting out grass seed and fertilizer, and also Bulbs for next years flowers.

remove the screens from your windows,it may not seem like much but the mesh of the screen does block sunlight,a natural and free heat.I was told it would save you about 15 to 20 % on heatin cost,by a home inspector..also the spray foam insulation in a can is good for crack around bulked doors..from the sill to the foundation.
a door sweep on the bottom of a drafty door is good too,you can get them to look nice a metal like brass or just plastic,(i use one on each side of the door) hmmmmm i know i know more, just had a brain fart. if i think of more i'll come back.[wink]

You could check your attic insulation to make sure there's enough up there. It's not exactly about winterizing the house, but I noticed that Lowe's home stores are giving free workshops in the month of September about getting a lawn ready for fall and winter.
