Those little gnats you're describing sound like little fruit flies to me. They're attracted to produce that is usually sitting on the counter (like bananas or even a bowl of fruit).
They also love the moist soil in potted plants. If you have any indoor plants, you might want to check them to make sure the soil isn't too wet. Sometimes you'll see the little gnats flying around the leaves or crawling on the top of the soil. Moving the plant to a sunnier location and allowing the soil to dry in between waterings usually gets rid of the gnats.
great tips everyone! thanks!
deda--where would you find neem oil?
thelma--yeah, that's how the little buggers got there in the first place. silly me had bananas sitting out and a couple on the bottom got a bit yuck. *doh*. but no indoor plants right now, so that's not an issue.
I heard of this way you can make a trap to get rid of them. Put a piece of banana in a cup, glass or jar. Then put saran wrap tightly around it. I taped it to itself so it was tight. Then poke small holes big enough for them to fly in. Leave it out and the little buggers will fly in the jar but strangley enough, they won't fly out. It works! We get a bunch of fruit flies here. I hate em. I have to wrap my bananas in a clean, dry towel and put a towel over my fruit bowl or they go nuts! Hope this helps. Oh yeah, you can either be nice and let em go outside, or do what you want with them once they are caught.
ok had another recipie for getting rid of these pesky things. You need a cup of cider vinager and place it with a lid on it anywhere you have them. Poke holes at the top so they can crawl through the hols. They shouldnt be able to get out.. Otherwise same consept, but with a touch of honey.. They are drawn to the sweet smell, and then captured... Dispos of in the trash when done....
