This is my first year at attempting to grow some herbs from seeds. I purchased some summer savory seeds from a herb farm, and planted them accordingly. But they are so stringy looking that I am not even sure if they are strong enough to grow out. They dont seem to be growing, but aren't dying either. If I took a guess I'd have to say they are about 3" tall. But I have peppers, catmint, cilantro that are growing very well, so I know it's not me.
Should I start over again, or is this normal for summer savory?
I can't tell you if this is normal or not for summer savoy because I've never planted it. However, your post prompted me to take a look on Google, and I did find one site that mentioned you should thin them out when the seedlings get only 1 inch tall. So, perhaps thinning them out will help the remaining young plants to thrive. Here's a link to the site that mentions the thinning: http://www.gardenguides.com/seedcatalog/herbs/savory.asp
They had a bit of a growth spurt after my post. But I am still not sure that they are as strong as they should be. They are supposed to have a strong light on them through their growth process and this is just impossible due to space and good ole Canadian "spring". I guess I have to hope for the best and worst case scenario start some a little later on and compare their growth (once the end of May roles around).
I'm growing herbs from seeds for the first time too. I think I got a little too enthusiastic with watering them, however, and only the chamomile has sprouted while the rosemary and catnip firmly refuse to wiggle out of their dirt homes. I guess I don't know what to do, but I thought it was funny that someone else was having baby herb problems. [lol]
Planting herbs from seed is trial and error. Some herbs are difficult to sprout, germination times may be longer, soil may not be right, ph may not be right, lighting and wetness may not be right.
Some are downright finicky and some seem not to care at all...lol.
