The longest night of the year will soon be upon us. A slim crescent of moon will touch the sky with loving light, stars will swing low in the heavens, and the sun will set, as if bidding farewell forever. Millennia ago, our ancestors watched this departure with great sorrow. There was no guarantee that their beloved Sun King would ever rise again in the face of this, their darkest hour.
These Pagans were not the type to fear lightly, however, and with strong courage and resolve promised to sing the sun back. They built leaping bonfires, brought the verdant evergreen to their homes and whispered stories of love and light into that cold, dark night.
And in the morning -- the sun rose.
Imagine their joy, their deep jubilation at the arrival of love and life, back into their world. Imagine their dances, sounds of laughter and deep, sacred song that burst forth from their hearts as the winter was conquered, thusly. This innate, sweet passion and celebration of the sun is the very core of the Winter Solstice. This is the return of the light.
