As has been mentioned on here twice already, Susan Boyle!

For those of you who haven't seen her, she is a Â*47 year old Scottish Charity worker (& a never been kissed virgin to boot) who appeared on Britain's Got Talent recently (this is like American Idol but entrants can do anything they like, not just sing)

Anyway, my point here is this, why are we so interested in her? This hitherto unknown woman has been propelled from total obscurity to global stardom in a matter of days. Her fans include Demi Moore, Oprah and Larry King has interviewed her. There have been allegedly 100 million hits on You Tube to watch her.

Would she have been so interesting to us all if she had been (how can I put this delicately) aesthetically more mainstream?

Yes she can sing, but so can millions of other people

Is it because we love underdogs (we Brits are famed for it)

Do we admire her for just not giving a damn and getting on with doing what she loves?

I find the whole thing slightly patronising to be honest. The media have made such a HUGE thing of this. Are they saying then that if you're not good looking per se, then you can't be expected to do well at anything? It's almost like a freak show. "Ooooooh come and look at the ugly person and hey y'know what she can sing too"

Yes I know that it's what's on the inside that counts before everyone jumps on me... & good luck to the woman I say - I hope she makes a fortune from it all

But has society become so shallow and bored that the fact that a middle-aged woman who is not what most people can consider good-looking, but is able to sing, make have Such an impact on us?

"I just admire you so much for getting out of bed every day and somehow managing to cope with looking like that."

Now that to me is patronising.....

Honestly, I think it's an underdog factor. I'd be lying if I said it didn't knock me flat on my butt when she started singing, and if I was in the audience I'd be on my feet too! Maybe she's just a breath of fresh air?

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ! the woman has a Voice ! When I Listen to Music, I dont care Who it comes from - it is the Sound that stirs my heart.

While it is True that "Every Picture Tells a Story"......... the Song lets me paint my own pictures.
The Celts have an Oral History, passed on by Songs and Stories... and they still stir my soul.
