I think of Tolkien as a standard and thought that was understood for everyone. People who don't read Tolkien are just weird.

I think of all the authors I have read I enjoy R.A. Salvatore, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Laurel K. Hamilton.[smile]

Linn- Stephen R. Donaldson is great!
I also like Heinlein, Ursula K. Leguin(SP)
Terry Pritchard writes in the style as Douglas Adams, and the Xanth novels are loads of fun.
Other good series are those by Katherine Kurtz - The Deryni Series, John Varley's Titan, Wizard, and Demon, and for those with a decidely classical sense of fantasy I would recommend Dante's Divine Comedy.
