I’ve delayed writing about this, I suppose knowing that spring is here helps.
About two weeks ago 29 of my brothers died, died in deep dark underground because one person made a decision that profit was worth more than those lives. If you’ve ever worked in the mines, especially underground, you are part of a select fraternity. Even though I haven’t worked as a miner for over twenty years, I still feel the call of those deep dark places in the belly of the beast. I understand why none of those miners left the pits. To go down into the dark is to test yourself against one of the worst environments and find those treasures the earth has hidden since Adam was a pup. Miner is one of the few jobs I’ve ever had that I truly understood how much life is truly “one for all and all for one”.
Look around your home and think of the raw materials that go into your daily, if those materials weren’t grown, they were mined and some miner, one of the brethren, put his or her life on the line for so you could have it. And for the 29, they died so you don’t have to freeze in the dark, remember that when you turn on your lights.
